Sumo Basics

Sumo (相撲, sumō) is a form of competitive full-contact wrestling where a rikishi (wrestler) attempts to force his opponent out of a circular ring (dohyō) or into touching the ground with any body part other than the soles of his feet.

The sport is steeped in tradition and ritual, with its origins dating back over 1,500 years. Today, professional sumo is organized by the Japan Sumo Association and holds six Grand Tournaments (honbasho) each year.
